Invitation to the Dance is based upon Op. 65, J. 260—a piano piece in rondo form written by Carl Maria von Weber in 1819. The piece tells the story of a couple at a ball, starting with a young man politely asking a girl for a dance; they take several turns around the room; and they part politely.
