To The Girls

We are beyond excited to announce that we will close the 2021 festival season with the world premiere of TO THE GIRLS, a brand new play that is based on research and interviews conducted in the Bay St. George community! TO THE GIRLS is written by award winning playwright, Meghan Greeley (Corner Brook), and will be directed by STF’s own artistic director, Heather Braaten.  Show Dates are September 30, October 1-3, 2021

“Late November 1963. Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in Stephenville, Newfoundland, established during World War II as the first line of defense in the event of a North American invasion, has changed the small town forever. For better and worse, the “friendly invasion,” as it was known, shaped the land, culture, and even the dialect of Stephenville irreversibly. Our play is set nearly twenty years after the war, the future of the base, and the future of the locals employed upon it, is in question. For a group of young Newfoundland women working on Ernest Harmon as secretaries, personal and political upheaval is coming at them fast and hard: a forbidden marriage and impending emigration; the threat of the Cold War; a beloved-and begrudged charity fashion show for the officers’ wives; a religious faith forced into the shadows; an estranged relative with some serious anti-American sentiments and a long-held secret; and for one new girl, a growing question over the land itself and to whom, exactly, it rightfully belongs. When news of John F. Kennedy’s assassination puts the base on high alert, the lives of these women become inextricably linked to the future of a country in turmoil—an America that both is and is not their own.”
